Bright Airy Workspace

An Eagle Rock business owner and mother of young children asked Otto to convert her existing garage into a home office. The challenge: keep it separate enough that she can focus on her work, but integrated enough to be present for her children when needed. With this intended use in mind, Otto thoughtfully and creatively designed a beautiful and functional office space that strikes the perfect balance between work and home. And with a full kitchen, bathroom, and lounge area, this bright and cheerful workspace can easily double as a cozy guest house for hosting out-of-town family and friends.

The Existing Conditions

  • The garage’s location on the property line prevented windows on two sides of the unit

The Design Decisions

  • To compensate for the window limitations, Otto placed skylights in the kitchen and bathroom for maximum natural light
  • Vaulted ceilings make the small space feel larger and more open
  • An L-shaped kitchen with floating shelves maximizes counter space and allows display opportunities
  • Custom fridge and white oak desk (with clever storage shelves for legs) bring style and functionality to the unit
  • Sink placement at the window lets anyone inside keep an eye on their kids when they’re playing in the yard
